Workers' Rights in the UAE
A practical legal guide for every worker in the country — regardless of nationality or profession.
1. Employment Contract
Your contract must be in writing and registered with MOHRE (Ministry of Human Resources & Emiratisation). Verify it matches the offer letter you signed before arriving. Any clause that violates Federal Decree-Law 33 of 2021 is void.
2. Wages & Salary Protection
Salaries must be paid monthly through the Wage Protection System (WPS). If your salary is delayed more than 15 days, file a complaint with MOHRE on 600 590 000.
3. Working Hours & Leave
Maximum 8 hours/day or 48 hours/week. After one full year you earn 30 days of paid annual leave. Overtime is paid at +25% (+50% at night).
4. End-of-Service Gratuity
After one full year: 21 days of basic salary for each of the first 5 years, then 30 days per year. The employer cannot withhold it except in narrow legal cases.
5. Domestic Workers
Governed by Decree 9/2022. You are entitled to one weekly rest day, 12 hours rest per day (8 continuous), 30 days annual leave, and your employer cannot keep your passport.
6. Arbitrary Dismissal
If dismissed without legitimate reason you may claim up to 3 months' salary in addition to your full end-of-service dues. File within 30 days of dismissal.
